Why PolGeoNow?

Premium map of territorial control in the Syrian Civil War Trusted Source: PolGeoNow's territorial control maps are used as reference for illustrations in The Economist, BBC News, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, Al Jazeera, and more. We've been cited as a source by articles from Slate, the Daily Beast, the European Union Agency for Asylum, and Small Wars Journal.

Professional Cartography: Our maps are designed to complement both formal and informal publications (for customers with permission to re-publish them), and preferred by organizations like the World Bank, UN, and European Union. Educators are welcome to use them in classrooms without permission, as long as they're not posted on a public web page.

Academic Rigor:
All our maps and accompanying timeline reports are researched in exceptional detail, with sources cited and an award-winning geographer at the helm. We always aim to do (much) better than everyone else in taking all available information into account, and we're always happy to discuss our methods and sources.

Accessibility: Our cartography aims to balance detail with conciseness and clarity, and our reports provide in-depth detail without requiring any previous knowledge of the conflict zones in question. They're written to be suitable for both experts and newcomers.

Just the Facts: PolGeoNow's reporting doesn't shy away from inconvenient truths, but neither does it take sides in conflicts or political disputes. We don't make policy recommendations, and have no agenda other than showing you the real situation in the places we're mapping.

Honesty and Humility: We don't pretend to know more than we do. Our maps stand out for liberally marking areas as under "mixed/unclear" control where other conflict mappers rely on speculation to divide up all territory among the warring parties. And we stick to our area of expertise - we're geographers and conflict trackers, not policy analysts or military advisors.

Pride in Customer Service: As a subscriber you can always get in direct contact with a real person by email, and we're dedicated to resolving all issues to your satisfaction. We treat you the way we would want to be treated as customers. Because we have no separate support staff, responses can take a day or two, but you're always getting the right answer direct from the source.

For more details of who we are, including example links to publications that have used our maps, see our About page.

What's the Catch?

We get it - you're not used to making purchases from a small website your friends haven't heard of. But payment is entirely managed by PayPal - we at PolGeoNow never see your credit card details, and can't access them.

Here are the biggest disadvantages to signing up for our control maps subscription service:

Costs more than some newspaper or app subscriptions. We put immense amounts of time into our control maps and timeline reports, and with our small subscriber base we have to charge a bit more so we can keep it going. We have no research grants or corporate sponsors, and our whole operation brings in less than $20,000 a year (before expenses and taxes). But if you can't afford the price or aren't able to make online payments, please get in touch with us, and we can probably discount or waive the subscription fee for you.

User accounts require manual set-up on our end. Unfortunately we're still running on a cobbled-together subscriber system that requires us to manually create your user account (which we promise to do within 24 hours of your first payment). In some cases you might also not be able to cancel it from your end, but don't worry, we'll cancel payments for you as soon as you ask us to, whether or not you explain your reasons, and we'll also refund any charges that slipped through in the meantime. We're working on setting up a proper automated system, but just keep getting delayed because we have no dedicated IT person and we spend so much time perfecting our maps and reports.

Sporadic and unpredictable publication schedule. Because we're struggling with funding, it sometimes takes longer than expected for us to produce updates to a given map series, and sometimes we go a few months without any publications at all (though you can always browse our full archives going back to 2011). If this sounds like it might be an issue for you, please get in touch, and we can have a frank discussion about whether our offerings fit your needs. You should know that customer feedback plays a big role in which work we prioritize, and that we can sometimes share preliminary versions of maps with you early if you need them.

If you can afford to support our work, please consider doing so - the more subscribers we have, the more we can offer in the future!
